Whether you are working on a short story, novel, website content or business document, your use of language is paramount. Written work speaks volumes about its author, as effective communication is the pinnacle of human interaction. Photographers often have a second shooter for large events; with the belief that writing is an art and should create a vivid picture in much the same way as a photograph, [words & phrases] can be your second set of eyes for your written work.

[words & phrases] offers a range of services, assisting with creative development, editing and proofreading as well as many other issues writers often face. Issues such as poor grammar and lack of development can prevent a decent piece of work from becoming a great piece of work. Do not let these issues get in the way of telling your story.

What I Do

Creative development (developmental editing)

Authors can spend hours diligently scouring over each word, line, and paragraph--yet still feel as though something is missing. For a creative development project, I will walk with you through the process of developing your written work. From initial thought through to completion (or at any stage in between), I will coach you through the writing process, providing insight and direction while helping you to maintain your distinctive voice. Some common issues that may need to be addressed are development, audience, clarity, tone, content, style… you name it! A developmental editor is not a ghostwriter, but a guide, a coach, a traveling companion. This type of editing ensures that both author and editor are able to see the forest AND the trees.

Examples of Creative Development projects:

  • Fiction
  • Non-Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Memoir
  • Website Content

When I edit your project, I am looking for surface issues such as grammar, punctuation, word choice, sentence structure, and overall balance, while ensuring your vision has emerged clearly and concisely.

Examples of Proofreading/Editing Projects:

  • Academic and non-academic research and presentations
  • Admissions essays and personal statements
  • Theses and Dissertations
  • Newsletters
  • Brochures

About Me

As a graduate of Otterbein College's creative writing program, Alonna has a passion for her art. Trained by authors, editors and lifelong literary enthusiasts, she takes a holistic approach to creativity; believing that a creative soul is an artist not only in writing and expression, but to the core, evident in one's entire way of being.

With over twelve years experience in creative development and editing, Alonna has become attuned to recognizing linguistic opportunities. As a staff member of Quiz and Quill, Otterbein's literary magazine, Alonna worked with anonymous bodies of works to determine readiness for publication. With specializations in poetry and personal essay, Alonna is a proponent of 'show; don't tell' for creative writing work, while maintaining an appreciation for 'tell; don't show' for technical writing.

Believing that cumulative education and experiences define one's value system and life's work, Alonna completed a Master's degree in Business Administration and married this knowledge with her love for writing to form [words & phrases].

Your project will be designed to meet your specifications. I will focus on your desired outcome and expected completion time. In order to ensure a unique and thorough experience, a limited number of projects are accepted. Thus, prices will be designed individually to meet the needs of the project. You will be provided with a proposal after our initial consultation, detailing your expected cost.

As a general rule, development work is more intense and requires more time, effort, and meetings than would an 'a la carte' editing project.
